Working climate in an organization

Comfortable working climate

Working climate in every company is considered to be something very important for all team participants. When working atmosphere is comfortable, people enjoy working and show great results. Of course, executives see better performance of the team, founders and CEOs enjoy rapidly growing turnover and people using services of this company enjoy company’s progressive products.

At first sight it seems very easy, all you have to do is to rent a comfortable office, establish the policy of the company everyone should follow, have good coffee and biscuits. However, as practice shows it is definitely not enough to make people happy. Spending at work the most part of their lives, passing through different circumstances in their “home” life, having different life approaches and goals, usually, the most important point to reach this “comfortable working climate” is to make people understand each other, respect each other, support each other. Only when the team would feel being one single “mechanism” you will see the magic of collaboration in your office.working cliamte development

The faster company grows, the more difficult it is to keep people on the same page, moving forward progressively. When the company hits international level, the other problem occurs. Working with people from different countries, establishing offices in different time zones would require much more time to make people understand each other. Also, taking into account cultural specialties in each country it is practically impossible to set the same policy for all and to keep people happy at the same time.

A great example of how this can be achieved was described in the book “No Rules: Netflix and the Culture of Reinvention” written by Reed Hastings, founder of Netflix and Erin Meyer, a well-known consultant on the diversity of business cultures all over the world. The main idea of the unique Netflix approach was to act in the best company’s interests. No matter who you are, where are you from of which nationality and which position do you have, just do your best to achieve the goals and make the company better.

This approach gives lots of freedom to the employees from one side, while from the other makes them operate with much more responsibility.

Role of feedback in working climate development

Another important point, besides freedom and responsibility, is collecting the feedback. Without an honest and clear feedback, you will never know if you are moving in the right direction, until it will be too late, and you will see talented people go. You can get feedback anonymously, talking to each employee personally, or sending questionnaires. The most important part is to make “your people” talk. Without fear to say something wrong, just tell what is on their mind. With this information you will be always capable to react quickly and will have everything to write, modify or adjust your company’s policy.

As reality shows, energetic, motivated and happy people, which are not afraid to share their ideas will bring lots of good ideas and will help the company and business to succeed.

And always keep in mind, that not only massive changes and expensive things can bring happiness to your office. Even small things like personally written gift card or tiny complement from the company for the birthday of the employee will bring lots of positive emotions to the recipient.
